FT. WASHINGTON, PA - The cross country team officially began their 2010 campaign Saturday afternoon, running in the Gwynedd-Mercy College Invitational to jump-start the new season.
Although the race didn't count as an official team-sanctioned event, several runners placed amongst the top individual athletes in the event, none better than Ellen Squire's fourth place finish during the women's meet.
The second-year runner missed securing the bronze prize by only six seconds as Squire posted a personal best record of 20:03 during the 5K race, a number that placed her just 28 seconds behind the gold time. PBU's top sprinter managed the feat amongst a 61-person field.
Rookie runner Kristen Fornwalt finished second for the Crimson Eagles and positioned herself 38th overall after completing the course in 24:33, and Joanna Cross added a 49th place tally with a 26:54 to round out PBU's top three.
On the men's side, freshman Brandon Brzezinski placed 25th overall out of a 64-man field during his first collegiate race, sprinting to a time of 30:56. Fourth-year vet Ian Shock managed a 32:58 to place 39th overall, and Matt Jacobs closed out PBU's top three with a mark of 35:29, finishing 50th.
The Crimson Eagles will take a two week break from game action before running in their first team event at the Dickinson Long/Short Invitational on September 18.
