ASTON, PA – The men’s soccer team has been picked to finish eighth overall within the Colonial States Athletic Conference, according to the recently released coaches’ poll.
Following a 2-6-1 league record a year ago, the Crimson Eagles will look to manufacture their first postseason berth within the CSAC since joining the conference three years ago. However, the group will have to overcome several formidable opponents in order to do so, including last year’s conference champ and current repeat favorite Cabrini College.
The Cavaliers outscored their opposition by a collective count of 8-1 during an impressive postseason run last year that included their second straight CSAC title. The Blue and White are favored to make it a three-peat after collecting 93 points during this year’s preseason voting, while last year’s regular-season runner up Neumann University finished second in the poll by posting 90 points overall.
The Crimson Eagles, meanwhile, received 29 total points, finishing eighth out of the 10 team field. Led by newly appointed head coach Scott Fogarty, the group will bank upon a young crop of talent to help replace nearly 70 percent of the team’s scoring from a season ago following the graduation of All-Conference studs Phil Haas and Jeremy Dunham. The arrival of 11 new faces should help replenish some holes left from last year’s group.
"The team is working hard and doing their best to hit the ground running," said Fogarty. "We've got a bunch of new guys, but the character of this team already seems to be showing itself. I'm very excited to see what they'll accomplish this season."
The soccer team opens up their 2010 game slate on Thursday, September 2 against Marymount University in Virginia.
"I know some of the schools in our conference have a history of strong programs and you can sometimes predict the contenders, but at the end of the day you still have to play the games."
